Not so merry Christmas...

Well, it was actually, but here's what happened.

Unwrapped my beautiful new Squier DJAV , bubble-wrap and all! Everything nice and shiny and wonderful. Plug it in and hell breaks loose!

It played fine for a few minutes until the sound was overpowered by various crackles, clicks and pops. I changed out the leads, the battery, tried it through a different amp and still nothing but crackles and the like. I left it for a few hours, just incase it was being moody or something, and then I plugged it back in. No sound at all.

A shoddy wiring / soldering job? If so, is there an easy fix, or should I just hand it back to the dealer for repairs?

Thanks!

Sounds like a bad soldering job. Possibly on the Jack. Crack open the cavity and have a look inside at all the components solder joints. If the problem is this drastic ie. "no sound", the problem should be obvious to see (disconnected wire). If there is no obvious disconected wires, loose joints etc, then get a soldering iron and some solder and re-do all the conections. Only do the soldering if your confident with it, because if you're not you could cause damage to the components.

Let us know the outcome.

I opened up the cavity and noticed two stand-out things. The wire going into the Blend pot was really frayed and another, I'm not sure if this is a defect, wire was wrapped in some sort of thin black foam for protection and it was just connected to the preamp, but nothing else. It could have been a connected wire, though.
Opened up the jack plate and all but one wire was exposed at the connection, that might be the problem too. I won't try my hand at soldering, I don't want to botch it, so I'll take it to a tech.

Thanks for the help

Just take it back to the dealer, it is under warranty so you can either get them to repair it free of charge, or ask for a completely new bass of the same kind.
