Nut buzzing

Sign in to disble this ad
The nut on my MIM Fender Jazz is buzzing when I slap or pluck the open A string. Also, when I tune to drop D, the D string flat out slips right off of the nut. Is this an issue with the tuners, nut, bridge, or a combination of two or more things? Any thoughts and ways to fix the problem would be appreciated.

Sounds like a bad nut if your E string is slipping out in drop D. You should be able to tell just by looking at it if the slots in the nut are abnormally shallow, wide, etc. As far as the A string goes, try switching strings first. You might be able to lay a small piece of thin cloth or something in the nut slot underneath the string to keep it from rattling, if it doesn't screw up your string height too much.

I had a buzzing problem with the nut on my Fender J. Some Red Loctite fixed the problem.

The A string problem is common with all Fender basses.
I just try and wind as much string on the post as possible. This creates a nice sharp angle and keeps the string well seated.
I try not to trim any of my strings ever. I think it affects their life span...but, that's for another thread.
