Nut replacement woes

Sign in to disble this ad
I just bought a Tusq pre-slotted P-bass nut to throw into my SX -- it's a necessary replacement as the original nut cracked at the E string the first time i changed strings.

I haven't actually attempted to install it yet, but I took a look at the stock nut and was comparing the two... it looks like the tusq isn't going to be tall enough. I was expecting it to be the opposite: that I'd have to file or sand the tusq nut down to size, but it seems that the sx stock nut is inordinately tall, or that the nut slot was cut excessively deep.

Is there something i could put under the Tusq nut to raise it up or do I need to buy a tusq blank and try and work with that? If possible i'd much rather stick with a pre-slotted nut since I don't have a lot of tools (just sandpaper and needle files really) and I don't trust my ability to shape a nut from scratch.

Sure, you CAN shim a nut, but it's not REALLY the proper approach.

You really need to get a blank and start from scratch, at least if you want it done right.

Yes, i got it from basspartsresource. It came unmarked so i suppose i'm just taking their word that it's a Tusq nut. I had an issue with my order (wanted to add some knobs to the order, I emailed them 10 minutes after my initial purchase) and no matter how many times I called or emailed they never wrote or called back. Needless to say I'll never purchase from them again and will advise others to do the same. God forbid I wanted to return something... as it is I'm planning to just eat the cost of the nut and figure something else out.

My slots aren't cut too deep, the whole thing is just too short (height-wise). I may just take the bass to a tech to get a new nut installed properly. It's really the only thing that I'm pretty afraid to mess up.

ishouldbeking... I just sent you a PM, I've got a couple extra SX nuts, and you're welcome to one of them to get your bass back in gear.

... Peace
