| Nut size specs for newly defretted p bass

i just got a pre cut nut for my squier p bass (that i recently defretted) what is the optimal height for the nut, is it possible to adjust it myself (im assuming i have to file it down more than i already have to fit it in the slot), if so what are the best techniques? thanks in advance
