Nut slots distances?

How do you do the string spacing at the nut when filing new slots? Do you measure equal distances between the string centers or between the string sides? The nuts I have around here and pics on the web suggest the equal string center spacing, as far as I can tell. I did a couple of searches here, but didn't find anything relevant...

no...not exactly...what you want is the space BETWEEN strings to be equi-distant, so you'll have a slightly wider centre-to-centre on the bass side of the nut
