Ohio Tbassers! Know A Good Setup Man?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello all! I need to have some setup/tweaking done on a bass of mine, and was wondering if any of you Ohio natives know of any good luthiers in the area, who specialize in this fine art. I live in the Akron/Canton area, about an hour south of Cleveland, and don't mind some drive time if the guy is good. I had a bad experience some time ago, with a supposedly renowned luthier, who handed off my custom bass to one of his assistants, read; young guy with no experience, who proceeded to do a fret job on an almost brand new custom instrument with zero fret issues. Needless to say, I was dealing with many issues on this instrument for quite sometime, including fret buzz, etc. Why do inexperienced guitar techs want to rip the neck off of every bass they get, and plain down the frets!? Anyway, I'd like to avoid this experience this time around.

Thanks guys... Kdogg

one of the guys on here (from the DB side of TB) owns the Fifth Avenue Fret Shop in Columbus. They do top notch work there. You could PM him and ask if maybe you could get a TB discount possibly.

i had a guy up here in cleveland setup my last bass and i wasn't pleased at all. The tuning past the 12th frets was out of whack and the action was too high. On top of that, he threw in some last minute charges for "screws and glue" when i told him i would be paying with a credit card. I don't recommend Wright Guitars in Lakewood. Just in case someone recommends the guy.

+1000... 5th Ave Fret Shop for sure... He's a really straight forward kind of guy, one helluva bass player, too. If something about your setup sucks, he'll flat out tell you... Hey, that sucks... lets do THIS...

If you're ever in the Mansfield area, try Metronome Music and have Pat Waseman do some work. I don't mean to sound dramatic, but he is THE man at setups! He's done at least 30 of my basses and a slew of basses/guitars/banjos/mandolins for the past 40+ years. He's reasonable too.

I'm originally from the Massillon/Canton/Akron area.

If he's still in business, you want to contact Virgil Lay in Akron. Its been several years since I've lived up that way (since the mid '90's), but he's as good as I've seen, and I've been fortunate to have found some great luthiers over the years, including in Columbus.

My only concern is that Virgil is no longer in business - he was fairly old last time he did a de-fret for me. Search him out - if he's still around you can't go wrong and he's not too far from home.

Thanks everyone! Hey Eric, Lay's guitar has always been a great place, but Virgil is no longer running it. His long time assistant "Danny", is now the proprietor. Dan does a nice job, but some of his assistants don't seem to be all that knowledgeable. It was a young kid, that Dan has working for him, that messed up the setup on my bass.

This is so timely.
I have set up issues with a Jazz bass of mine and I was wondering about the Fret Shop and if they were any good.
I think my concerns have been addressed.
I'll go there this week and have them save my baby.

An update.
After careful examination we've determined that my Jazz will go under a complete restoration. It seems to be a very nice '66 neck on a frankinstein body.
The neck is too nice to stay on the ash body I have so now I'm looking for a suitable alder (read light) body.Aged stock parts will go on and the refinnished body will be aged to match the patina on the headstock.Dudes,I'm am excited.I've seen what they can do and they are very good.
Thanks for the heads-up on "The Fret Shop"!
