OLP MM2 sounds too thin

Sign in to disble this ad
Need some help from the experts. I picked up an OLP MM2 and I'm having fun with it. One thing I don't like is that it lacks lows. I think it needs more fundamental tone.

Without jumping right into pickup replacement, might some particular strings beef up the low tones? Perhaps hex core, pure nickle or something else?

My amp is an Acoustic 220 into a 115B cab.

Thanks!

I had that exact bass. What I did was first changed the knobs from V/V/T to a Series Parallel Switch/V/T. I liked that...but then I added a Nordstrand MM4.2 pickup and that and the S-P made a world of difference to me.

Tha strings I used on it were D'addarios XL's.

I know you said you didn't want to jump right to replacing the PU, but I also put a nordstrom in mine and it made a world of difference.

The first thing I would do is raise the pickup on the low side.
I had to do that with my MTD Kingston 5. It was really thin sounding on the B. I added some additional foam under the PU and that did the trick. I actually angled the PU because it was pretty hot on the high side. So the G string was about an 1/8" further away from the pole than the B string. It's a good place to start and you aren't dropping any cash on it if you don' like the results.

Thanks for the replies! I'll start adjusting the pickup height. Not sure I want to invest in a new pickup yet because I don't know if I will keep it.
