One Note Sounds Off

The F# on the 9th fret of my A string (as well as at the 4th fret of my D string) makes an odd noise when I play it through my amp at fairly high volumes. It's especially bad when I pluck hard, but it's still there even when I pluck softer.

First thing I tried was detuning the string and then tuning it back up, making sure it wasn't twisted somehow.

I'm kind of stumped. My amp is pretty cheap, but it didn't have this problem before.

You have an F# at the seventh fret of your A string?

Intonation issues?

I once had a very strange intonation problem; it was on a stingray. I couldn't get the D right until I separated the saddles by the tiniest amount (with a razor blade by the way....). I got it dialed in and the saddles went back eventually to contact with one another but the problem (similar to yours) went away.

It's odd, the intonation is fine according to the tuner. No anomalies in the string, anywhere between the bridge and tuning peg.

Maybe there's a loose fastener in you cab causing a wolf tone at F#?

^This^

The same thing happened with the old amp I have. Got it serviced. Screws tightened, wood glued back together = bad sounds gone.

Test your bass without an amp and/or with another bass amp just to be sure it's the bass and not the amp.

Well, I fixed it. Somehow. I fiddled with the EQ and then set it back just the way it was and it somehow went away.

Weird.
