Open D farts

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok... I have noticed a second problem with my Fender Jazz after my recent setup (the first being a dead G string)...

When I play an open D, my amp farts out pretty bad. Though when I play notes on the D, it sounds ok... not perfect, but ok.

This is when playing through a SWR LA12 combo.

Any suggestions?

Maybe the nut. Press down on the string behind the nut and see if it does the same thing when you pluck it.

Nope... still farts. I wish it was the nut.

Does it fart when you play D on the A string? If it does, maybe it's just the frequency? How old are your strings? Have you tried a different D string?

Nope, the D is fine when played on the A.

The strings are about a week old. They were a pack of Rotosound steel rounds, standard guage. I had the local music shop do a much needed setup, and the D and G strings are both bugging me for different reasons. The D is farting out, and the G sounds flat and dull with no tone, and is somewhat difficult to fret. It's driving me nuts. The E and A sound fine, with that signature Rotosound brightness and twang... but that's it.

Then the problem isn't the amp or speaker. Something on the bass isn't right. Sounds like you should go back to where the recent set-up was done.

To narrow it down, how does the open D sound acoustically with the bass not plugged into anything? Can you hear anything vibrating or buzzing. This will tell you if the problem is mechanical or electronic.

Exclamation

Not an amp related problem so this thread is moved to Setup & Repair.
