Open E dead note

Sign in to disble this ad
On my Schecter deluxe-5 the E string plays a dead note when its open. I have raised the string and lowered the string. none of the other strings do it. It started after I went on vacation and didn't play it for about 3 weeks(no worries i had another bass on vacation). It seems that it is dying because of vibration against the first fret because I can play F. It stops when I raise the string higher than I would prefer but it makes it feel awfully weird to play. The string is not tapered although it should be(for the purpose of fitting smoothly through the hole on the bridge). every other note is fine on the E string. The B string doesnt have the same problem. I can't figure it out. Please help!

Is the nut groove worn down too low on the E-string? You can try the old "match" trick or some other small piece of cardboard to lift it up a little and see if you can clear that first fret better.

Ultimately getting a new nut is the best bet but you can build up a few layers of superglue or clear-coat nail polish in the slot to compensate for the time being

You were just the one willing to pay the most. That doesn't sound like winning to me.

A little dab of epoxy will also do nicely, you can file it as well if needed.
