I just had a simlar problem with my jazz bass.

I loosened the string and made sure it was wound putting pressure on the nut. The buzz went away.

Also, I checked the bolts that hold the neck on. They were a little loose. I tightened them up and all is well.

I hope this helps.

Make sure to also check your tuners that everything is tight. I have had a loose nut that held on the tuner post before and that can cause a problem.

Did it have some heavy gauge strings on it, and now some light gauge strings? What I mean is - is the "A" string slot wider than the string?

If it happens when you play really hard, then your action may be to low. Raise the A string bridge just a bit. If that's the only string that has the problem, then this may solve it. If you hold the bass up and look across the strings, is the A string lower than the others? If you look down the neck from the side, is the neck straight?

I've been adjusting a new 5 string and had to redo the string installation, raise the action until all the buzz was gone, then tweak the neck because of a bit of bow, then lower the action as low as I could. My D string was a bit buzzy so I raised it a bit. I'm still working on it but for the most part I have great action and very minor amount buzz when I play hard. I don't play very hard most of the time anyway so it really won't be a problem.

Is the bass set-up? The first step is to check the truss rod. If you sight down the neck and notice that it is extremely bowed or back-bowing a bit you should straighten it out. a little relief in the neck is fine. From there you should go about setting the bridge so the string height is "Standard" for the make of the bass. Then you'll want to check your pick-up height and intonation.. but those last two won't really effect the buzz unless the pick-up is extremely close to the string.. ANYWAYS.

If you really dont know how to adjust the truss rod it's best to take it into a local guitar shop to get a basic set up and have them focus on the A string. Odds are, the set-up will fix the entire problem.

Are there enough wraps on the tuning post to give the string a downward break across the nut slot?
