Open A String Problem

I've checked it properly and its not a buzzing sound. It does not touch any of the frets. It sounds normal when its fretted, only have that weird rattling sound when I play open. My open E, D and G are fine. What can I do to rectify this problem? Thanks.

you have wound your strings on the tuning post incorrectly. Most of the time my customers cut the string too short and there isn't enough pressure on the nut. The string needs to have two to three wraps on the post.

+1 that is a very common problem on Fender style headstocks where there's a "string tree" that holds down the D and G strings, but not the A. The solution, as gfried84 points out, is to make sure the string is wound correctly with at least 2 or 3 wraps on the post. You can also install a larger string tree that holds down the A string as well, if you don't mind modifying your bass.

Don't cut your strings next time you put them on. There's really no need unless you have a short-scale bass.

I had the same problem, discovered it was from the bridge springs. Try hitting the open A and holding your finger over the springs.

I'm guessing you have a Fender. Make sure you have about 3 wraps around the post next time. This is only essential on the A string.
