P-Bass Knob Issue

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello all. I have a 2002 Squier Affinity Precision Bass. For some reason, the knobs do not want to stay on the pots. Any ideas why this is happening? I've noticed it on other P-Basses as well. Thanks guys!

What kind of knobs are they - do they have a set screw like American P basses, or are they just the pop-on kind? If the pop-on kind, with a split shaft on the pot, then my guess is that the shaft is slightly bent so that there isn't as much tension inside the knob.

You can get a complete wiring harness with CTS pots for under $20 on the net, and new knobs with set screws for under $10. It will change your tone, for the better... add a used Fender '62 Reissue pickup for $50 used, and it's a pretty cheap upgrade with major benefits.

If they are split shaft knobs, (which is highly likley on a Squier, my VM J has 'em) the sides may be bent inwards. The shaft should look straight and even like this :

If either side of the shaft is bent inwards towards the slot, the knob will be loose. Easy to fix, just use a flat bladed screwdriver to carefully bend it back.
No need to ge a whole new set of pots.

True, but DO NOT bend them back any farther than the minimum needed. They can snap off when over-stressed.

If you don't want that problem anymore then do what I did - shove a popsicle stick in the slot, break it off and trim to fit. It'll never bend after that.

Right. I meant to say that too. Even if you don't break them, if you go too far it can make it very difficult to get the knob back on. Just make sure you get the sides straight and even as in the picture and you should be good to go.

I've also seen in a post by Chunger in his thread about modding SX's how he sticks a piece of a zip-tie trimmed to fit in the slot like that.

They are indeed the split-shaft knobs. I'll give the bending a try. Thanks guys. And thanks for the suggestion of changing pots, but I'm diggin' the stock tone. All suggestions are appreciated!

Just bend the shaft side out a tiny bit. Then retry knob. Tiny bit more bending outward if needed after try it.

be careful, it's really, really easy to bend that tab just a bit too far and break it right off.
