About a month ago I finally broke down and got myself a pickup cover for my trusty P-Bass. Found one on eBay for $12 so I bought it, installed it when it got here, and gave it a try. And after a month I'm really liking a pickup cover and I'm kind of wondering why you don't see more of them on P-Basses these days. With the cover on my right hand is in the perfect playing position, between the neck and pickup, where the tone seems the strongest. And playing behind the cover produces a more trebly yet punchier sound. Now this is probably perception more than science, but it seems to me like the sound is more focused with a pickup cover. Also I find myself playing more with the "hook" one-finger style popularised by James Jamerson, simply by resting my hand on the cover. And if it's good enough for Jamerson, it's good enough for me!
Anyone else find the same thing as me?

For a more mellow tone, I play in front of the pickup. I rarely play behind the pickup, mainly just for emphasis. Hmmm, by rarely I mean in comparison to over or in front of the pickup. I would play behind the pickup at least a bit at every gig |
