i know it's been done before but can you usually bolt on a fender jazz neck to a precision body with little or no fuss? also if there are any good threads on this, point me in the right direction. |

| | | | Yes. I've done it a few times and it's a direct drop in replacement unless there is some weirdness in your bass or the replacement neck. Some of the Fenders were poorly made with oversize neck pockets and a slight wood shim was needed on these, but no big deal.
You should try to buy a neck that's not yet drilled for the neck screws and do this yourself to ensure the best fit. Most new necks come undrilled so if you're getting a new and unused neck that should not be a problem. |

| | | | +1 on undrilled neck. It is the only way to ensure correct alignment. Pre-drilled, or used necks are a crap shoot. Sometimes they line up. Sometimes they must be plugged and drilled. It happens often enough to make a virgin neck the only way to go if one has the choice. |

I've heard talk of problems with some J neck models on certain P body models, but I don't have any experience with this myself. |

Here's a pic of my MIM P-bass Special. I changed out both pups to SD Quarter Pounders and this baby can now run with the big dogs and hold it's own.

| | | | I am about to do kind of the same. I've bought (not yet received) a P-bass reissue '57 body and will need to find a neck that fits. Well, it is actually a Squier JV from 82. I guess I could always get a '57 reissue P-bass neck, but I am not really comfortable with the width of those. I'd prefer to go for a "modern" US P-bass neck, or perhaps a '62 reissue Jazz neck. Anyone knows if this is doable? |

| | | | You should be able to do it. Just beware of the exceptions noted above and the fact that it's possible a little fiddling may be required.
There are many replacement necks available these days in a J width. If you buy from a respected company it should fit.
Myself, I wouldn't buy a used neck unless I could check it over in person first. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
