P Body and J neck

So I bought this 1995 MIM P bass on Ebay which seemed fine at first but it developed a nasty crack some time over the first year. It had good tone so I was thinking I would like to put a Jazz neck on it. I tend to have the luck that if I can possibly get the wrong one I will. What should I look for to ensure a low stress assembly? I know it has 20 frets and is just under 24 inches from the heel to the top of the nut. Are there any other factors I should consider?

A standard Fender neck should be able to fit on it. For the easiest possible assembly you can buy a neck on eBay that was just removed from a Fender bass with the tuners and nut still intact. All you would have to do is take the old neck off by removing the screws on the back, putting the new one on, and putting on new strings.

J neck on P body is my rig of choice. As stated above, try to get one that came off an MIM body. The aftermarket necks (MightyMite, etc) may require some sanding of the heel to get a good fit.

Generally speaking, the necks are interchangeable. That said, they are not directly replaceable. If you simply bolt a new neck on it may line up correctly or it may not.

Most techs prefer a replacement neck to arrive in a virgin condition for this reason. They can line it up properly in the shop.
