pain in the neck

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,

i would appreciate some advice from you knowledgible folk. i have a MIM fender jazz circa 1999 and it has been neglected for a while. i;m really getting back into playing now but the guitar feels horrible.
the action is incredibly high and i can't adjust the truss rod in it because the threads where the truss rod is adjusted at the top (the allen key threads) are completely rounded from where somebody had tried to and failed previously in adjusting it.
so i'm left with a bass that has high action that can't be adjusted. the thing is when i had the bass and it was new i never really had the love for this guitar as i had a friend with the same (MIM fender jazz) that played so much better!

so i'm looking for some advice. would it be a good idea to replace the neck. i see someone selling a mighty mite neck on ebay at a good price or is it possible to replace the truss rod somehow?

any words of wisdom greatly appreciated,
shug.

Get a new neck or have the old one repair by someone who know what they are doing.

Hi shug.

Take the bass to a shop to have the truss rod nut replaced.

Shouldn't be too bad financial-wise.

Then either pay for a setup or do it yourself. I'd prefer latter .

Hey thanks for the replies guys.
Is it that simple to get a new Allen key nut at the top?
I think I fancy the idea of a new neck. There are mighty mite necks going for a good price on eBay, would you guys recommend one?
Might give me some new love for this bass.
Cheers,
shug

Most likely, if it's just the slot that has taken the beating.

Getting the old one out may be a bit of a PITA though, best to leave that to a pro if You're not a DIY type with proper tools.

I don't have any experience about current mfg instrument parts, but generally all replacement necks need at least some fretwork to be done.

Hey Sam,

thanks for that reply. Think I might treat myself to a new neck and see how I get on putting it on then hand it to a pro if the frets are not right.
Cheers!
Shug
