Painting Ibanez SR506

Sign in to disble this ad
I want a 6 string bass with a pickguard and Surf Green or
Daphne Blue Colour.
Where I live, I found an Ibanez SR506 and Ibanez Sr1006.
506 seems cheaper to me - my Q is :
It is a very dark wood (dunno what it is) Which colours can it be painted? Sunburst? Can it be painted to Surf Green or Daphne Blue? Candy Apple REd?
What I mean is : Would this colours work or would they look ugly with the
dark wood? Here is the pic of the bass:

And I want to put a pickguard on it.
The colours I want seem more possible with the SR1006?
It is a lighter wood like ash but not sure which wood.

Any ideas from luthier brains?

Ibanez SR506

I used to own the SR506. The body wood is mahogany. In order to get the colours that you mentioned, you gotta sand the finish down. The colour is actually stained to be dark brown and finished with lacquer. It's gonna be quite a bit of work and probably won't be cheap unless you know how to do it yourself. As for adding a pick guard, you gotta custom make one as most of the pick guards out there doesn't really cater to shape and contour of the bass. Anyway good luck with it.

You can apply a base paint in white and apply whatever color on it. But this will probably hide the grains of the wood. I personally like the natural color as offered in the picture you've linked but is up to you.
