Painting a Pickguard

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello all. I'd like to make my white pickguard into a black pickguard.

Would all I have to do is spray paint it with black spray paint?

or is there an extra spray I need to do?

Thanks!

Use Krylon Fusion, it's made for plastics.

And scuff it up with some 0000 steel wool.

Then just spray thin coats.

There was a thread about this a few weeks ago. We all jumped in with advice. The guy did it, it looked good but he reported it came off easily due to thumb wear.

For sure, paint will not be as durable as the plastic pickguard. I think the Krylon is about as durable a paint that you can spray on would be.

Worst case scenario is it doesn't hold up and you have to buy a new pickguard.

Yes, scuff the pickguard until all the shine is gone so there is something for the paint to grip. Watch out for dust. Sand lightly with 400 grit wet or dry sandpaper between coats. It'll probably take 3 coats.

i would definately recommend adhesive plastic vinyl found in hobbyshops. It looks really good, you can change it whenever you like, doesn't rub of on your fingers and doesnt ruin the pickguard.

i've done this to several pickguards, works great.

I did this to a white SX pick guard changing it to black. I used automobile paint from parts store. They come in little spray cans for touching up bumpers etc. I sanded it lightly then applied a grey primer coat 2-3 times then 3-4 coats of black...you couldnt scratch it off unless you used some thing sharp.... it bonded right to the plastic...very tough. The only problem was the paint smell stuck to that bass until the day i sold it...ewwwww hated that part i would just buy a new pic guard over the smell of the paint.
