Peavey Fury neck question

Sign in to disble this ad
I just picked up a 1995 Peavey Fury P-bass clone, and I was wondering why the maple fretboard is so shiny (i.e. what did they put on it, and how do I get it off). I wouldn't care normally, but it doesn't appear to have been put on with the greatest of care from the factory. I know the history of this bass, so I know it wasn't something the previous owner did. Else than that, the bass is flawless!

The back of the neck is more satin, but I want to refinish it also. The end goal is to make it as close to the finish (or lack there of) of my MusicMan Sterling.

So all you TB experts, how do I go about this? And before you ask, yes I did search, and found a few posts on refinishing the back of the neck, but nothing really specific as to the fretboard.

Thanks in advance!

If I were you, I'd

knock down the gloss w/ 0000 steel wool.

That's it? I assume there will still be enough of whatever it is to protect the wood... now, the back... same thing? It doesn't appear to have as much or any on it, I was thinking super fine sanding & some oil.

I'll give it a whirl & see what happens.

Thanks!
