Question Which pegs to use on a '72 P-neck?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys,

I'm sort of stumped here. I got a nice neck off of ebay (72' P-bass) some time ago that came without any tuning pegs. I sort of hoped I could use a set I had from another Vintage Reissue P-bass (bought in 2005), but no cigar. The "main" holes in the neck seem slightly smaller, and the four holes on the backside of the peg isn't in the same place as the ones that have been there.

Also, it seems like the backside of the pegs that have been used before were flat -- and this is not the case with my Vintage Reissue set. I've tried to do some searching, but I've come up with nothing that's helpful. I don't really want to start messing around with the neck, so I'd rather find one that fits. One that's flat on the back of the peg is also nice.

So what I'm looking for, I guess, is the identical tuning peg set like the one they used on a Fender P-bass in '72!.. I can't really afford buying a vintage set, either.

(I'm having a hard time explaining this, but hopefully you'll understand what I mean. I can't seem to find any pictures of this.)

Thank you so much in advance.

Sincerly,

Finn

The non-Fender equivalent is Schaller BMFL

You should be able to pick some up on ebay or in the classifieds.

Short Shaft clock wise to tighten 70's tuners should do it. .... I have mostly pre CBS tuners on my bass which are long shaft counter clock wise..... Fender changed between the two styles around 69/70. ..... I'd pay the extra $$ and pickup a set of 70's Hipshot tuners. You pay more for vintage old Fender tuners that they can be a tad sloppy. ......

Thank you for the answer. And these are the exact spec as the '72 pegs? Doesn't Fender carry any set that is of the same specs?

Also, would you guys happen to know if a Gotoh Vintage 4 IL would fit? Where would you guys normally buy equipment like this? Ebay, other webpages?

Ebay would do maybe Musicians Friend, look on the net for suppliers. Hipshot web page would give you their model number. Some companies aren't exact replacements so do the research and if you get it wrong you can replace them for the right ones. Schallers does make a 70's model not sure about Gotoh's.

I think either HB2 or HB3 would fit; is there any way to check this with a Fender database or something along those lines? I haven't got the neck with me right now.

This may help in finding the right size and model number

To confirm, you will need to measure the diameter on the holes in the neck. Don't force/hammer the ferrules for the new tuners into place - they can easily split the headstock.

HB-2 is the closer between the two. The HB-3 will fit but has the longer neck which would be pre-CBS 60's model. ..... Consider also the d-tuner combo. .....
