Pickguard matainence

Sign in to disble this ad
So I have a P-bass that about 4 or 5 years ago I put on a new black pickguard. That was back in the day and I had put stickers on and I colored the white line around the edge in black with a permanent marker. I know... stupid move and pretty much useless, but I was much younger. My question is does anybody know how to effectively remove sticker gunk and the permanent marker from the edges with little or no marks afterwards. Thanks guys.

Goo-Gone. You can get it at the hardware store.

Test Goo-Gone on an inconspicuous area - just in case it attacks the plastic, which it normally doesn't...but you can't be sure.

If Goo-Gone or Motzenbocker's Lift-Off (ACE Hardware) doesn't do it, you'll be in for a replacement pickguard.

The adhesive on the "stickers" can be removed with either naphtha (lighter fluid) or soap and water. If one works the other won't. If there are multiple labels, both may need to be employed. After the labels and residue is removed wash the pickguard in soap and water. Finish with a polish like Meguiar's #10 plastic polish.

The edge of the pickguard can be cleaned up with a razor blade scraper. Take a single edge razor blade and run the sharp edge against a hard shaft. Carbide is best. A good screwdriver will work in a pinch. The idea is to turn the edge into a j hook. Lightly scrape the newly constructed scraper along the beveled edge. It will remove a thin shaving of pickguard and reveal a new, clean edge. It takes a light touch to do this correctly. If you are not handy or your favorite tool is a hammer take the guard to a pro.

Thank you guys very much. I felt like an idiot when posting, but I guess that's partially what the forum is for. Have an amazing new year!
