Question Pickguard for P/J Bass

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking to get a Squier Standard P Bass Special which has the P/J pickup setup. It comes with the plain ole white pickguard. I want to get a black one for it. My question is: Since the input jack is on the side (instead of next to knobs) and it had a total of three knobs (one tone, two volume), do I need to look for a "special" pickguard, or will a regular Fender P-Bass pickguard fit?

Regarding pickguard options I have found two viable sources so far:

1) Chandler Music/Pickguard Heaven

Pickguard Heaven: Prices - Jazz Bass Type - Fender and Squier

Looks like lots of options and decent pricing.

2) The second is Pickguardian,

Pickguardian Custom Pickguards

If they do not stock what you need and do not currently have a template on hand you would have to send yours in for to match.

But either way I am pretty sure you can get what you want and then some.

In theory any P guard should work. The third hole, typically for the input jack, houses the tone pot. Squiers arent very regular on where the holes are located, especially for the PG screws. Generally you can take any pickguard from an MIM or MIA and swap them and they screws line up. Ive found this is not always the case for squiers or other import basses. if you dont want to have to trim the neck pocket, pickup hole, and/or make new holes in your bass to fit the screws, then you need to get a custom guard based on your current guard from the websites above.

Here.

AZ Guitar Parts

You will need to trim roughly 1/16 of an inch from the neck pocket of the pickguard where the base of the neck touches the guard. Everything else lined up fine for me. I used a small file and it took 5 minutes.

My apologies. I mis-read the OP as a PJ style bass. Both companies can still help but the links are for a jazz style and not P style as requested.
