pickup adjustment

hello,
i love to slam on my bass to make a hard thomp on the E string at times. The problem i have with this on my new jazz bass is, i cant find the proper height to set my front pickup. If i go too low i lose tone. if i go to high i clip the magnet when slapping. anyone have this same problem, or have a solution? Im thinking of getting some bassline pickups without the magnet just to prevent this. good idea?

Perhaps a pickup cover without holes for the poles. Or maybe a piece of packing tape over the top of the pickup to prevent contact? And maybe when you hit the strings hard, do it closer to the fingerboard so you're not pushing down right over the pickup.

I use black electrical insulation tape over my black pickup covers... Trimmed nicely to fit of course... no skanky torn off ends on mine...

shim the pickup inside the case...

take the bobbin out of the case...put a piece of cardboard, or two between the top bobbin and the inside cover...such that it holds the highest pole piece is JUST below the surface of the cover...now you can raise the pickup as high as you like without clipping the magnet...

right now, I've gone with electrical tape on TOP of the pole pieces, (2 layers), which also works...but the shim method looks a LOT better.
