Pickup height problem?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Mexi jazz bass with Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders in it. I sounds great to me, buy when I plugged my guitarist's Road Worn P-bass into my amp, it sounded huge: louder, sharper, more aggressive, and jut HUGE. I didn't change any of the settings on the amp, which is a Mesa M-pulse 600. So is there a pickup height problem with my jazz? I would assume that the quarter pounders would be hotter than the stock precision pickup. Thanks for the help.

Why don't you take measurements from his bass and copy those onto your for start? Measure string height and pickup height and neck relief.

Just try rasing your pups, it could be partially that. Other then that. maybe check to be sure wiring is right with no partial shorts etc.

Thanks for answering both my questions! I took the pickups out? Propped the foam on it's side so it would be taller, and put them back in. It worked very well for the bridge pickup, not so well for the neck, so I'm going to probably put some shims under the pickup tomorrow

Do you mean wood shim? That's fine but Just get more foam and double the foam up. Good heavy foam weather strip from a hardware store is all you need.

I put a small amount of dense paper user the foam and I like the height, but the pickup doesn't seem solid. It's pretty wobbly up and down. Is this fixable? It's a problem because I rest my thumb on the neck pickup.

Add more foam or shim so its under compression at your pup height and pup is stable.
