I have usa '95 jazz bass on which i overturned the truss rod and cracked the nut so that the neck was in most tight position. i then bought a new neck from '97 usa jazz bass but then it hit me that i might use the broken one to have a fretless bass. i removed the frets and now want to ask if there are any problems putting the tightly adjusted neck with no frets on the bass to run it as fretless. thanx.

Do it and see what happens.

broken truss rod in tight position

Neck won't have enough relief. String will hit the fingerboard unless action is extremely high. Playing in tune will then be a challage and will not lend itself to developing good technique on a fretless.

thanks. ok i guess then i would have to remove the fretboard first, then replace the truss rod, then glue it back again and then have my fretless neck. anyone done that before? i would appreciate any comments. thanx guys.

There are some detailed walk-throughs of guys removing fretboards -- it's labor intensive. If you've got nothing to lose, go for it.

You might focus on trying to find a clever way to get that nut off -- you might find an answer that's less difficult than replacing the fretboard.

DIY is fun, but consider that you can get a fretless neck from someone like rondo for 40 bucks -- if redoing the fretboard takes you 10 hours of work, it's like you just paid yourself $4/hour...so it'd better be for the fun of it

Like my AVATAR says "You're Mad" but like Lethargy said. IT would be cheaper to buy a good neck from Rondo.

Then again if you have the time and want to do all the work fixing the neck, then it will be double fun playing it. (bragging rights too )
