Polishing a 79 black P-bass finish

I just got this p-bass and I'm wanting to reduce the noise or hum I'm getting from it, and that topic is in the electronics section.

Also the finish has some checking in it that is pretty profuse, and some of the un-checked areas has a hazy look like some chemical was spilled on it or something.. I'd like to find a good method to polish it and make it uniformly shiny all over the body, which is otherwise in pretty good (meaning not real scratched up) shape.

I googled the situation and found myself on a Telecaster forum where a Meguires product was being mentioned.. But I'm not brand loyal, just looking for a good solution! Thanks for any and all answers.. John C.

I love Virtuoso polish. It has a cleaner and a polish. Made for guitars and basses. Can restore finishes pretty well.
