Possible problem w/ Spector

Sign in to disble this ad
I was checking out my bass today and there is a huge bulge in the wood where the neck meets the headstock. I've had this bass for almost 2 years, but I can't remember if that bulge was there before or not... I took off the truss rod cover and it *looks* ok. Can any spector owners (it's a Czech Rebop 4) tell me if that is normal or is my bass ruined? It plays fine and there are no cracks in the wood at all, it looks like it was made that way but I can't remember it being there. If it's not normal, anyone got any ideas how this could have happened?

is the bulge on the front of the headstock or the back of the neck. If its on the back, the bulge is likely a volute.

search for "volute" and you'll see what i mean.

If the bulge is on the backside of the headstock where the neck and headstock join, it is a volute. I have the same thing on my Czech-made Spector NS4CRFM.

Thanks for the responses guys. I was worried for a minute, as I hadn't seen my bass in probably 2 weeks time it's amazing that I couldn't even remember what it looked like.

Yes. I second that: I had a Czech Rebop DLX 5-banger. There is a bulge where you're describing it. It was there the day I bought it at GC. I think it's one of the more sensual aspects of the craftsmanship.

That bulge is called a heel, they have been used for years on Gibson guitars but Fender dont use them. Somewhat usefull in the dark. I have heard guitarist complain about a guitar not having one after playing for years with one. I think it is only there to make the joint on layed back headstocks stronger.
