Possible to Switch out 34" neck for 35"?

Sign in to disble this ad
I bet this has been answered before, but I can't find it....

What will happen if I put a 34" scale neck on a 35" scale 5 string bass? I would expect:
- Relative pup placement will change
- intonation will need adjustment at bridge - bridge might need to move?
- spacing will change slightly as you go toward the nut

Any other things I'm missing? (no doubt there are, I always miss at least a few)

Is this even possible to do (assuming the neck pocket etc match up)?

So maybe I'd need a 34" scale case? Ah but it should still fit in my cheepo gig bag....

I think you pretty caught all of the concerns. Except, that the depth of the neck pocket is as important as the fit.

But, in the interest of the archive, I will add that the concerns you listed are applicable even if both necks are of the same scale. The scale of the neck has nothing to do with the length of the neck. Scale is the placement of the frets and the overall length of the string system.

FWIW, it's a VERY big pain in the pants seat to retrofit two unlike body parts. It takes a lot of effort and understanding to get it to play well.
