Possibly dumb question regarding tuning

Sign in to disble this ad
So I popped my g-string today. I play a 5er, and I've been meaning to replace the strings for a while anyway, so now that I was forced to stop procrastinating, I was gonna get to it. Problem is, no wire cutters!

I'm up at college for a couple more days before Thanksgiving, so I was thinking of tuning the lower 4 strings to EADG until I can get home and replace the strings. Would tuning this way for a couple ways be bad for my neck or truss rod?

If its tuned BEADG then yes if you take off the B-string and move the four higher strings down one.

However you popped the G-string on the bass so no, you cannot with that large B you will probably break it before it gets to E and put a lot of tension on your neck too.

Define "bad" for your truss rod.

The result of breaking a string and not replacing it will probably throw it out of adjustment within a few hours. The truss rod works in conjunction with the combined tension of all 5 strings. Moving the strings around may have additional consequence, but the 'damage' will have already been done.

Once you put the G string back on, it should recompensate (for the most part). You might need a slight adjustment.

Tune your BEAD strings up a fourth to EADG? No.
For one thing the tension will be so high it will be wierd/difficult to play plus I wouldn't be surprised if the strings broke - they're not made to be tuned to that tension. Then there's the effect of all that tension on the neck.
Try it for a few minutes - I'll bet you'll change your mind.
