| pre-slotted nuts are fine if they're made of a decent material ("tusq", say) and are somewhat close to the right size, but yes, they still have to be filed and shaped professionally to fit right. this is important, because the right fit and filing makes all the difference in playability, tuning, and intonation.
their real advantage is that a good tech can install one a bit quicker than making one from scratch, so it can be a little less expensive to have it done.
it's still not really a DIY job, especially with a finished and bound neck like the geddy.
