Precision barrel knobs: solid vs. split question

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a late 80s CIJ precision with split shaft volume & tone controls. I want to replace the knobs. Will the Fender original replacement barrel knobs, which are 6mm "solid shaft" fit? There are exact aftermarket knobs for split shaft, but I want to stay with genuine Fender parts.

If they're labeled "for solid shaft" they're not press-fit, but use the set screw to hold them to the shaft of the pot. You MIGHT be able to carefully put them on the split-shaft pot and tighten the screw into the space of the shaft. OR you can put a small piece of hard wood into the slot of the split to keep the shaft from compressing when you tighten the screw. If you just put them on and tighten the screw, then you'll probably compress one side of the split, and break the shaft.

"Genuine Fender Parts" doesn't really mean much any more. They're not machining their own knobs and they're frequently buying them from the same people that folks like All Parts etc. use.

Replace them with CTS Solid shafts.. and Fender OEM Barrel knobs. That is what I just did to my VM that use for my frankenstien experiments. Made a huge difference in volume and tone.

Perhaps the "Jack Bruce emulator"?
