Printable template for a P bass pickup cover?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi TB,

I purchased one of these for myself:

Does anyone have (or know where I can find) a printable template for positioning one of these on a P bass? I'd rather not eyeball it, if possible.

Model is a 2009 MIM P bass.

Same question for the bridge cover. Are there some diagrams that show exactly where to drill, rather than eye-balling it?

The bridge cover is 'as fit's' I'm afraid - but it's rather obviated by the size and position of the actual bridge itself. The rear corners of the bridge may be only a few thousandths clearance though when it's right.

Be careful here - there are a FEW older Ps that have wider bridges and will not accept a cover at all - and I have one of them:::

and I was frustrated but found a new home for the P-bridge cover I bought.

Now - the p'up cover is another thing and I have drawings and dimensions if you want them on a PDF printable file.

let me know

FYI: ALL P-basses will have the same dimension for the guard.

Center-to-center of the screws is exactly: 4.625" - so it's gonna take a little compression of the guard to fit it correctly.

This 'compressing' the guard is normal as the package has prolly been sat upon and kicked around the shipping house floor for a while and it is prolly distorted a tad bit.

Don't make a big mistake and install it as it sits, as you may have it sitting directly on the strings if it's bent flat badly enough.

One COULD eyeball it if one paid attention to the actual center of the screws that need to go into the PG and body.

Thanks for response Joe.

I went ahead and eyeballed the pickup cover last night (and it looks all right), but for the sake of my OCD, I would appreciate that template. Do you need my Email?

Yeah - PM it to me when you get a chance, I've got a small gig this morning so I'll be here in person a little bit later - this is being sent on-road via my Eee-PC.

Thanks Joe, PM sent. Good luck on that gig.

On the road back in about 2 hours. Gotta eat first down here in Palm Springs. The wind's so bad a chicken can lay the same egg three times.

Just had a simple electric blues gig at a small reception for some people at a retirement party. I play for meals so I guess I get a lot of this little stuff all the time.

They really needed me on horn - but I can't figure how to build a holder for a trombone while I also play bass.

I took the dimensions off an existing pre-drilled by Fender Precision pickguard and it is definitely 4.625" from center to center.

I don't find any way that it could be 4.5" but the cover itself can be bent to accommodate that .125" less dimension if wanted.

From where did that drawing come?

Just interested.

The 4-1/2" center-to-center dimension comes from my Fender '57 reissue pickguard. Wouldn't surprise me to learn that there's a 1/16"—1/8" variation amongst different models of their pickguards. I also have a pre-drilled MIJ guard with a 4-1/4" center-to-center.

I created it.

Nice drawing. Good 'nuff!

I already sent him a full-sized PDF this afternoon. All he has to do is cut it out.

Joe,
Somewhere around here I started a thread, over a year ago, to serve as a repository for all of these templates. A lot of guys need them (myself included, from time to time), and it's a royal pain to use the search function for templates buried in tons of threads. Maybe it's about time to resurrect that thread and make it more complete?

Would you be willing to help out?

Ahem! I think it'd be a good idea and I'd like to help.

All we need to do is search for them? Sounds easy!

I've got another morning gig - The Prune Faces in a Free Beer Tasting Room up in Big Bear - so I won't be around for a bit until late tomorrow. Depends on how much free beer I get to consume though.

I get to play Klezmer music. Anybody got any idea how to do that? My Yiddish hasn't been used since my New Jersey days in the early 1960s.
