i just put on a set of d'addario pro steels earlier today....and the E string sounds "chorusy" when played open. none of the other strings do this. it doesn't go away if i palm mute and play it open. it's harder to hear, but it's still there. it goes away only when i fret a note.
also, when i pluck the string hard, i can hear something vibrating. it does not matter what that string is tuned to. i've done the usual routine to check for vibrating springs on the bridge, electronics vibrating, etc., and i've isolated it to the string itself, i think.
is this a defective string? should i return it? is it normal? will it go away?
i have a gig tomorrow night, and i just don't like to sound like i'm stomping on a chorus box every time i play a low E. |

| | | | actually mine had that to i think, i have a mim, jazz v and i got a set of nickel wounds ordered and i got pro steels instead so i tried em out anyway and after a while i had that noise to and i tightened the tuning machine cause it sounded like it was comin from there but it wasn't, so i then thought it woudl be like a string twist or something but it wasn't, but eventually it just left. and boy o boy am i glad it's gone |

They are charicaristally "VERY" bright and could possibly bring out more unusual sounds off your ax. I don;t remember any sound that you are describing except I DID notice that they were too bright for me since I use SWR, I had to lower my tweeter respose to even it all out. It was very "GLASSY". I know this is not much help,, just an opinion. Sugestion,, get back to the good ol' nickel plate |

I have often the same "rattling" problem with D'Addario.... if you twist the string the external winding get a little loose and it rattles! For the chorus FX, you probably have the strings too close to the pups, or the string's not set properly over the nut. Try to push down the string with you fingers at the nut, just to create a better angle.....
Hope it all make sense

BTW, I love the Prosteels on my Roscoe! |

It will lessen over time but won't completly go away. it's juste a defective string. |

| | | | I normally use d'addario Xl's on my main bass. I'n a new string fanatic. I change them every couple of weeks. Yesterday I went to buy strings and they were out of the set I wanted.
So instead I bought the prosteels. Wow they sure are a different animal. They seem to have these harmonic under tones. I would agree it almost sounds like a slight chorus effect. I did also notice that I had to lower my pups just a hair because the tuner was going nuts. Sgt. Pepper mentioned that above also.
I did also notice a little rattling sound, as mentioned above I'm sure once they are broke in that will go away.
I would have to say that I like the sound of them alot, but they have alot different sound and feel than the XL's.

1. Lower your pickups - lower them a lot, and see if this helps. If not, it's really easy to put them back where they were.
2. Slacken the string to the point where you can lift the coils off the tuner. Lift them off and while looking from the headstock toward the body, twist the coils that wrap adround the tuner 360 degrees counter-clockwise and reseat the string on the tuner. Tune it up and see if there's a difference.
If neither of these suggestions help, see if you can find a bottle of Lagavulin 16-year old scotch. Try drinking half the bottle and see if you care anymore. |

in all seriousness, the sound has pretty much gone away now that the strings have broken in and evened out. maybe it was a messed up string and the natural deadening over time has made it less noticeable. whatever the reason, i'm happy it's gone. |
