problem with badass II bridge

Sign in to disble this ad
Finally got my neck on my Squier Bullet Bass setup with a couple washers and presto, it straightened up to the required relief. After that, I swapped out the stock bridge with a badass II bridge, and it fitted well, until I put on the strings, the action felt unusually high, so I brought it down to the lowest the saddles can go, and found it was still to high to my liking, and the grooves on the saddles have been filed. Anybody had this kind of a problem before?

Well, badass bridges are known for not being very low-action friendly...try a gotoh 201 or a hipshot B

You can try shimming the neck to lower the action. You have to lift the neck from the body and put a 1/2 inch wide slice of paper (business card) under the neck-body interface at one end or the other. Putting it at the bridge end will tilt the neck back, lowering your action.

I've done this before with good results; however, it took a few times to get the shim exactly where I needed it.

as others have said, you need to shim the neck. the bass plate of the badass is quite a bit thicker than a stock fender bridge.

I have 4 Jazz basses, all with BAII bridges - a Geddy Lee, an MIM that I swapped out and two Warmoth/Status basses. Two of the latter three needed a shim to get the action okay due to the increased thickness of the bridge, not sure about the Geddy as I haven't had to remove the neck.

It's no big deal - in fact, it's dead easy. As pdeon99 said, just take off the neck, cut a piece of something like business card about half inch wide and the same width as the bridge end of the neck pocket; trim it neatly and tuck it widthwise into the bridge end of the pocket. Neck back on, string up, and you should find you have a good range of action adjustment in the bridge saddles after this. 20 minute job or thereabouts. Let us know how that works out.

Credit Card??!!??

I thought everyone was suggesting a business card - considerably thinner than what you seem to have used.

all this talk of shimming, and yet I see an opportunity for problems here ...

when you shim your neck, be sure that the shim materials is put in a location between the mounting screws. you do NOT want to have shim stock between the bridge most screws and the butt of the neck - this will provide opportunity for BAD things to happen to your neck, as there is no proper support to balance against the upward thrust of the shim stock. Over a long period of time, the damage could necessitate you have your fretboard re-leveled to account for the ramp you created at the butt end of the neck.

all the best,

R
