Problem with Fretless Fender on A/D strings on higher frets

Sign in to disble this ad
Well, I've had my Fender for 1 year now, and it has begun to have problems playing on the higher notes. If I try to play around the tenth fret on the A or D, it carries the same dead pitch as playing any note fret in sucession.

A friend mentioned that this may be a "rod" problem within the neck of the bass. Any comment on what may be wrong / how I should attempt to fix this?

since your problem is in the higher notes only i don't think it will turn out to be a relief or trussrod problem. Also the problem didn't occur before, so as long as you didn't do any major changes to the setup or used it for baseball practice, I wouldn't look for the neck as the most probable cause. Any real problem in the neck would also have a effect on the low notes.

You said the notes sound dead, is this dead as in short or as in no high notes (or both)? You might have a look at the strings or pickup heighth first.

Dead as in they have no sound short of an off-pitch that is similar to each fret above the 10th. I hope this can be easily solved by checking the pickups.......

Sorry about not checking the sticky.

It could be a high place in the fingerboard at the 11th and 12th fret position. Or possibly a groove worn into the board at the trouble spot?

Do the notes clear up higher up the neck?

You might try raising the bridge saddles a little and see if it improves.

I doubt that the pup heigth or the strings would cause a problem in one specific spot on the neck.
