| Problem with my mates left handed bass!

hey guys,my mate has given me his left handed bass 2 fix,but the problem is i dont know whats a matter,the open notes,1st fret,second fret,third fret just give a rattling sound with no tone,as u get further down the neck it has sound,i dont get it,i have fiddled with the bridge of the bass lots and i cant get rid of this problem,sum1 please help me!
