Problem With A New Mod

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey TBers

I have a problem that I hope you all can give me input on. I recently purchased an SX SPB-57 FL (3TS-Burst, maple/maple) an am in the process of modding it. One of the things I decided to do was to change out the bridge for a Hipshot Vintage. To my dismay, this is not a direct replacement. Though the five holes in the rear line up, the SX has two more (7 in all) in the forward corner positions. Generally this ain't no thing, but the footprint of the Hipshot is slightly smaller than the SX, so the two forward hols in the body are not covered.

I don't want to just fill them and do a paint touch up. First off, I'm blind and would need another to do this anyway, but also because it still wouldn't look/feel good. I did however, think of another couple of ideas.

I could polish up a nice thin piece of ebony to fit under the Hipshot bridge. It could have a slightly larger footprint than the Hipshot bridge, therefore covering the holes. A secondary idea is using a piece of matching pg material instead of ebony.

1) Would this raise the bridge up too far?
2) What do you think? Would it look cool, or not?

Sorry, no pics until it's finished.

All comments are welcome. Thanks.

You could cut a piece of pickguard material to fit around the edge of the bridge and not go under it, making it large enough to cover the holes. If the holes are completely uncovered by the bridge, you could toothpick them and use pickguard screws to hold the cover down.

Hmmm I didn't think of that. Completely surrounding the bridge would indtroduce some corners to catch up unless I screwed all four down, so...What do you think...? Just in front? In front, then taper down the sides?

I'd bevel the material and round the corners, and I'd probably only cover the area where the screws were. It'd look something like this:

Well, to be honest, I'd get a different bridge, but I have enough guitars that I'm building that I could always find a use for it later.

Haha For a moment, I thought this thread was going to be about a new TB moderator that was hassling you.

O.K. I hear what you're getting at, but I think I'll have another take a gander at that image anyway. Thanks for that man.

Thanks for that advice too, but I'm going to be stubborn here. I like this bridge, so it's staying!
