Question Problem w/ shielding a MIM Jazz

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi guys.

So here's the the deal: I just finished shielding my bass with electrical tape and aluminum foil. However, when I plugged it into my amp, no sound comes out. My tuner doesn't detect it either. I double checked the control cavity, and nothing looked wrong. I didn't do anything major-I just shielded the control cavity and under the pickguard. I left the pickups alone. As the title states this is an 06 Fender Jazz bass MIM. Any suggestions on how to treat this problem would be greatly appreciated...thanks again.

UPDATE:I have tested the bass again, once w/o the pickguard, then with the control plate unscrewed.
the bass...
-does not play w/control plate ON and pickguard OFF
-DOES PLAY W/O pickguard and control plate NOT screwed on.

It is possible that the shielding is touching multiple points on the circuit and causing it to short. Happened to me on a recent job.

I moved the shielding around and it still doesn't work...could it be a problem if wires are touching the pots by their coated parts? You must remember I'm a noob at electronics.

Short circuit. Something on the control plate (a wire, a pot) is touching the foil inside the control cavity. Wrap some electrical tape all around the pots and wires on the control plate, then screw it back in. See if that corrects it.

OK, so I just taped the wires down and screwed it all together. The bass plays noticeably quieter. I have to say it-Talkbass and electrical tape saved the day!

Yah, but I bet it was even quieter while it was short-circuited.
