Protecting Autograph on Bass

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,
Last year I met Duff McKagan at a signing and got him to sign my Fender Jazz Special. I haven't played it since due to fear of rubbing off the signature. Any suggestions as to ways of protecting it but that won't look too noticeable on the bass?

Cheers

Kieran Imray

Just a guess, but there's probably some kind of clear coat lacquer that you can put over it.

You have maybe 3 choices:
The 2.5" wide, thick shipping tape.Which would probably chip and peel over time.

Some type of clear coat.

Or,you could get a big-assed zip-loc baggie custom made to vacuum-seal your bass.

STORAGE TIP:Keep in freezer to keep it from spoiling.Or,would a bass be considered a non-perishable item? You decide.

I met Marcus Miller and got him to sign my P bass. Unfortunately, I was on a cruise and couldn't put the clear coat on right away and it smeared a little. Check the avatar.
Clear spray paint in very light coats will work.

Stew-Mac sells clear adhesive PG material for acoustic guitars - a piece of it placed over the autograph would preserve it nicely. Why take a chance on spraying something that might make the signature run?

Hmm, stick the bass on your wall?

I think I'm going to go with Pilgrim's idea. I probably should have made it clearer in my original post that I am wanting to protect it so that when playing it won't rub off. It is signed pretty much exactly where my hand would rest/rub against when playing with a pick. I have been told that lacquering etc won't work because it will just flake off what with it being sprayed onto an already smooth lacquered surface.
