Question about adding J pickup to P

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm thinking about adding a J pickup to my MIA P. After installing a J pickup, do you use a P bass pickguard with 4 control holes (I haven't seen such a pickguard)? Or do you side-mount the output jack?

I'm pretty sure a 4 hole PG would require routing the body. The Fender MIM Deluxe P has a 4 hole PG. Personally I'd go side jack. I've always prefered those over PG mounted jacks.
Another option is to go with a stacked volume pot: V/V-Tone-Output jack

Easiest is the either the stacked V/V pot, master tone and output, if you can find a good stacked pot that's 250 on both gangs. Another choice is a small mini-toggle pickup switch with a master volume and master tone (a la the Telecaster guitar), but that's a small switch to try to hit on the fly. I'd go with a side-mounted jack, then you can use the stock pickguard for either a V/V/T or V/blend/tone (my favorite despite some small tonal issues that may or may not be important to you).

I never thought about a stacked volume knob. That'll do it.
