| Question about my tuners

Just scored a gorgeous handmade Precision relic off the TB classifieds, it was a trade plus cash, and so far it seems like a great bass. One thing I noticed is that the tuners, which have also been aged quite a bit, are a bit resistant to turn when tightening (not overly, just in a normal kind of way), but when you loosen the string, they give immediately and almost always turn too quickly. They seem well oiled, so I wonder is this somehting I can adjust by turning the screw on the back? Or is there anything else I can do? It just seems like they might come loose while I'm playing. Thanks in advance.
