Question about Neck Plates

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey, my question is this, will taking off the rectangular neck plate on my j-bass in effect separate the neck from the body? And if so when I'm replacing one do I just take the neck off in the process and put it back on?

The neck plate helps couple the neck to the body. It just adds extra area in which the neck is essentially touching the body. Replacing it is as easy as removing one and adding another. Just make sure the neck pocket is as tight as it used to be.

The neck plate is actually serving the same purpose as washers would do - that is, the neck plate keeps the neck bolts from pulling into the body wood. Fender used neck plates instead of separate washers because the neck plate simplified construction and eventually reduced the cost of the instrument.

Wouldn't it be best to remove the strings? Just a thought.....
