Question about satin finish on neck

Sign in to disble this ad
My favorite Jazz Bass came with a satin finish on the back of the neck that was like velvet! It's about eight years old now and I noticed the other day that the neck has been played so much that my satin finish has been "polished" by years of playing and now has a glossy look and feel to it.

I know lots of you like necks that have been "well played" but I don't like gloss on the back of my necks, to me it feels like my thumb can't slide around as easily. Anything I can do to bring back the satin feel without damaging the instrument?

Some 0000 steel wool should knock the gloss back down. Use a random "polishing" motion and you'll have a nice smooth finish.

All good info .........until you cut through whatever's left of the original finish.

Bare wood sky'd out from too much steelwool will be nicely textured though - so that might be a good thing.

Or not.

Or you could try the green "Scotch-Brite" type plastic scrubbing pads. Same effect as steel wool, but less danger of removing too much clearcoat.

Be sure to use the Gray or Silver colored Scotchbrites though - the green and purple are too course.
