questions re: Gibson SG Reissue & repairs in San Diego

Hello everyone!

I've acquired a Gibson SG Reissue in 10/07. At first, I fell in love with the short scale neck and the weight. It was a hassle to find a key to adjust the neck, but once I've found it and adjusted the neck to my liking, it became the easiest bass I've played. Now I know why Paul McCartney preferred his Hofner to the Precision and other bass at the time.

But now, I have a couple of minor issues with it. It seems the E & A strings are way louder than the D & G and the tone knob is absolutely useless. I got this bass thinking I would be in mud heaven, but it actually sounds a little metallic. I rolled the tone knob down to 0 and nothing changes.

The bass came with a DiMarizo Model One Pickup that I don't know what to do with. Should I swap out the pickups? Should I swap the strings with some flatwounds? Is it a pots issue with the tone knob? I don't know anything about electronics. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Could someone recommend a good repair shop in San Diego?

You may want to check the wiring on that bass. If the pickup has been replaced, it's quite possible the owner bypassed the tone control entirely while wiring it up. It's a simple circuit and should be easy to check.

If you want to try an original pickup in it, you might watch Ebay...people do a lot of swapping and an OEM will probably show up some time.
