quick question about adjusting pickup heights

Sign in to disble this ad
i've got a very quiet g string on my music man sub and i want to try adjusting the pickup height. the pickup has 2 screws on the bass side and one on the treble side. do i just loosen the treble side screw to raise it?

my concern is that the D string pole piece is much higher than the G and the D string volume is perfect, so if i raise that side it will make the d string even louder and i'll still have a problem, right?

i've had a full setup done on it after i switched to thicker strings

Perhaps it is more of an issue with a "DEAD" string than the p.u. height .
Just thinking out loud here.

that was my first thought too, and i have a replacement string on the way, but it occurred to me today that while playing unplugged, the volume is pretty even across the strings

and then to confuse me even more, the pole pieces are set at really different heights, really low under the E, really high over the A and D and then low over the G

To answer your question about loosening the screw - yes, it will raise that side. I'm also assuming the poles are set at different heights to match the curvature of the fretboard.

On the two StingRays I used to have, I remember there was an issue with both the D and G strings being quieter than the others. I didn't keep them around long enough to try and remedy the issue, but I wonder if that's somehow inherent to that pickup design.

This is a well known and common prblem with this pickup and preamp combination.

I'm sure that I read once that even MusicMan themselves admit to this problem. Some MusicMan basses are worse than others (fortunately my two Stingrays don't appear to be affected) but there isn't really a whole load more than you can do, other than use maybe a larger gauged G string or raise the pick up on that side.....

i don't know if it changes things but it's a passive sub.

i have a similar problem on my guitar, an Eastwood Hi-Flyer, with P90's. The (unadjustable) poll pieces are set to different heights.
In response to the post about poll pieces being set for fretboard curvature, I think that rather than assuming it is correctly set, i would presume that it is INcorrectly set, and that more even-heighted pickups would help
