Quick-release bridge not so quick

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an Ibanez SR655 5-string that features their quick-release bridge. This is the first bass I've had with this type of bridge; every thing else has been the more tradtional type where the strings run through the back of the bridge.

The problem is, it takes me twice as long to change a string with the quick release bridge! If I'm turning the tuning peg with my left hand while holding the string taut with the right to keep some tension on it as I wind it, there's nothing keeping the bridge end of the string from falling out of place and hanging free. I have to wind the string untill it's shortened enough tat the ball end of the string will stay put in its bridge saddle, then switch places with my right & left hands so that I can put the string back into the bridge, then switch my hands up again to finish tuning. How annoying.
I miss just running the string through the back of the bridge and having it stay put while I tune up.

Does anyone else have this problem with quick-release bridges, or is there some glaringly obvious trick to it that I'm completely overlooking?

Sit the bass body between your feet and steady the ball end that way as you wind.

use a bass pegwinder.

also, you should be "holding the string taught" along it's whole length, so it won't fall out of the bridge.

hook it to the bridge, cut the end a little ways past the key, jam it in the hole and bend it over;

one hand can hold the string while slightly bending it so it's tight at both ends while you wind with the pegwinder.
