Raising Action

Sign in to disble this ad
I play a Schecter Diamond Series bass, and the action is a little too low, giving me a buzz on all the strings, especially the G down on the lower frets. I've never raised the action on an instrument myself, but don't want to pay 40 bucks for a set up either.

Steps to raising the action properly?

truss rod problem, its too tight.first off loosen any strings in the way what your gonna do. what you want to do is remove the truss rod cover. Than take the correct allen wrench and put it in the hole. give it ONE turn clockwise. one full turn...like...as far as you can turn it with one turn. than leave the cover off still and put the strings back in the nut and tune them. see if there is buzzing, if there is, wait about...30 minutes for the neck to give away a little tension and turn it again

DON'T turn your trussrod more than 1/4" turn at a time. It'll take an hour or so to properly settle, but even then it may continue to settle for a couple of weeks. In the meantime, fluctuations in humidity and temperature will affect it. If you suspect the trussrod, look down the neck from the nut to the bridge. It should be slightly concave. If it's too flat, it'll buzz a lot. If it's too concave, it'll be a bitch to play. A setup isn't this simple. It's a combination of saddle height, trussrod adjustment, tuning and intonation. Take your time. No wild turns of the rod.

Whoa!! Not likely to be a TR problem if the rattling is on the notes closest to the bridge. Even if it is a TR prob, a whole turn is way too much to turn the TR nut. You'll have to turn it CCW, if you have to turn it at all.

If the strings nearest the bridge are buzzing, raise each saddle about 1 turn on each of the screws and check. Repeat as needed to clear up the buzz.

I wouldn't take that advice if I were you...

Not a truss rod problem. Just raise the saddles.

It's all you'll ever need.
Just start at the beginning and work your way to the end (don't skip steps).
