Rattle coming from control cavity

Sign in to disble this ad
Whats up guys,

I need some help. I've noticed a rattle in the control cavity of my G&L L2000 Tribute. It's been there as long as I can remember, but it never really bothered me. I've even opened it up twice, taking the control plate off from the back trying to locate where its coming from. It rattles whenever I shake the bass, or even when I do some vibrato.

I'm almost positive its coming from a pot-I don't know where else it could be coming from. Do you guys have any ideas what the source of the rattle might be? Solutions?

Thanks,
Joash

A loop of wire that has enough slack to flop back and forth can sound like a BB rattling around in there. That's my first choice...Second would be the outside possibility that a pot shaft has developed some play and the weight of the knob acts like a pendulum and pops out and back as you shake the body. The third possibility is that a very small ball of solder from the installation has been left in there and it rattles. Open the cavity and shake it upside down and see if something falls out.

oshkoshjoash--you say it happens "when you shake the bass". i'll take it that means unplugged.

keeping hambone's suggestions as to where to check in mind....have someone else "shake the bass" whilst you apply finger pressure (on the pot shaft for example) do this to every loose area you can think of....process of elimination.
gotta be something simple you're overlooking.

sooner or later, you WILL find it with this method. could it be the control plate itself?

best o' luck.......duc

the pots have absolutely no play, and the wires are in there real firm.
