Rattle at the nut on A string only

Sign in to disble this ad
I am getting a rattle at the nut on my Precision P bass at the nut on the A string only. E, D, G are all good. I have a feeling the nut is what is rattling. I guess the worst case is a broken truss rod, but I would think you would hear that on all strings.

Thanks for any help!

Not enough wraps on the A tuner.

I agree on the not enough wraps comment. You must wrap the string around the tuning post until the string almost touches the headstock bushing.

A poorly cut nut could also cause a rattle (nut slot too wide and/or deep).

yep, a common issue with fenders.

the G and D are held down by the string tree, and the E is close enough to the nut to naturally be at a steep angle, but the A will rattle unless you put extra wraps on the post.

Thanks gang. When I lightly press on the A string on the headstock side of the nut and play, it goes away. I am restringing soon and will add wraps and check the slot cut.
